dragonfly identification

aggie Jun 15, 2004 07:34 PM

I found this dragonfly trapped in my apartment in Corpus Christi, Tx and managed to save it from my cats. I was hoping someone might be able to identify this dragonfly? I've looked all over the net and have had no luck whatsoever. Thanx!

'Tis a damselfly... not a dragonfly

Damselflies hold their wings together over their body while dragonflies rest with them spread out.

Additionally, damselflies are divided by their wings - broad or narrow. This is a narrow winged species, much like a bluet - as opposed to a black wingged damselfly, which has broader wings.

I am not going to bother with the species - I just don't know enough about them - but this is most likely a bluet. They have a bunch of attitude, and are found around meadows and streams. they lay their eggs in or on (I can't remember) slightly submerged veggitation.

Get a copy of the Golden Guides Insect pocket book - or their pond one! I have cared for more different types of inverts than most, and that set of books are my most prized possession!
