Damselfly identification please...

pilonm Oct 18, 2006 09:07 AM

Hello!

Today I have a damselfly to identify... I took that picture last july at Sherbrooke Quebec Canada (near Vermont/Maine). I think that she is from the Coenagrionidae family. Maybe Ischnura verticalis but I'm not sure... Can you help me?

Thank you very much (as always )

Michel

Michel, it looks like a Familiar Bluet (Enallagma civile).

Hello Lizardman,

You are completly right with the genum Enallagma...

But by comparing my picture with the picture and the text on the following web site of Quebec's damselflies, I'm pretty sure it is E. cyathigerum.

http://odonatacentral.bfl.utexas.edu/fieldguide/species.asp?taxaid=688

Here are other pictures of other Enallagma species from Quebec. 2 of them looks very similar to E. cyathigerum but I found some minor differences with mine (color of legs, colors of segments, etc...)

http://odonatacentral.bfl.utexas.edu/checklists/namerica/canada_checkList.asp?State=Quebec

The 2 other looking similar are E. boreale and E. civile.

By looking at the picture of E. civile on that picture, it seems to me that there is a real difference between the 4th last segment of mine and the 4th last segment of E. civile. Their is also bleu colors in the wings of E. civile... (maybe due to the photo itself, I'm not sure...).

What do you think about what I've found?

Thank you again!

Michel

Hi Michel.

Yeah, they are very similar & I don't have that great of a monitor on the computer to check out the discrepancies.

The genus is most likely correct, but again, I could be wrong on the species. If Enallagma cyathigerum is the closest in looks, then that's probably the correct one.

PS-You take some excellent pictures.
