How to keep cats away from bird feeder

Canarymom Jun 22, 2003 08:39 PM

I live in a townhouse community that has a stray cat roaming around. The past few days this animal has killed two mourning doves who come to my feeder and eat on the ground. Today, I was too late to save the second dove. Sadly, I cannot continue to keep the feeder up and invite the birds into my yard to be killed by this cat, and thus have taken it down.

Any suggestions/ideas on how to keep this cat out of my yard so I can put my feeder up again and have the birds eat in safety?

Thanks for your help and ideas!

Well, they say that moth balls will keep a cat out of a garden. Don't know if it would bother the birds too though. Might be worth a try. Good luck!

If it were me, I would set out to catch/trap the cat. It's not good for the birds OR him to be out straying. Most humane societies or no kill groups will be able to rent you a live trap.

This is right. Plus, the wildlife department usually has some for citizen use. They ask a rental fee but it is refunded when you return the trap (so the traps don't disappear!) Not sure what the set-up there is but I once tried spraying some of the stuff you can get at Petsmart to keep cats away around the area of the fence where one was coming over. It worked temporarily. The trap is a long-term solution, though, and maybe the cat could find a forever home. Katc
