Baby Food Good For Cats?

frannie Jul 28, 2003 10:49 AM

Hello!
I have a question for you. My orange tabby is a very picky eater. I feed him Nutro Max for adults and also Beechnut Baby food, the chicken type. It has chicken, ground chicken and chicken broth listed as ingredients. When my other cat had cancer and had problems eating my vet said it was all right to feed this to him. I am just wondering if it's all right to feed to a healthy cat. I like to feed both wet and dry but have been unsuccessful finding a brand of wet that he will eat. We adopted him from the SPCA when he was 14 months old and had a real problem finding the right food. He won't eat anything else besides Nutro Dry and the beechnut baby food. Unless you consider plastics and string food!

Any opinions would be gratefully received,
Thanks!
Frannie

Well, plastics and string are definitely not on the approved kitty diet! Many people use baby food as a treat for their cats, but it does not contain the taurine and other vitamins and supplements that a cat needs. If the substantial part of the diet is dry food, a treat of the baby food is fine. Also, make certain that the baby food does NOT contain onion products. These can cause a form of anemia in cats. Another option might be to make a home made diet for him. There are a number of books and diets out there to guide you. Or post a question on the Feline Holistic Alternatives board and I am sure you will get more information!

As long as he is eating enough of the Nutra he should be ok, but they baby food should not be his main diet, just a treat. And tell him that string is certainly not a food substance for kitties.

Thank you for the advice! I only give him a couplke of spoonfuls a day. And his main diet is the Nutro which has taurine. The the jar of baby food doesn't list onions -- so it should be all right.

Thanks again for putting my mind at ease!
Great boards!
