I live in Manhattan, and have a small cement yard that is completely surrounded by cement walls approx. 8' high. I like letting my cat outdoors, but once I saw he was going to a particular corner of the wall, jumping up, clinging to the cement, and then pulling himself up, and then OVER the wall, I could no longer let him out.

I decided to try and fix things so that he could no longer get over the wall. I had a handyman build a metal obstruction at the top of that particular corner, and when I let me cat out afterward, the obstruction was enough to deter him from even trying to jump. However, he then tried a different corner and eventually made it over the wall that way. Barring having a metal "roof" of sorts installed at the top of the entire perimeter of my yard, can anyone think of other ways to dissuade the cat from jumping onto the wall and climbing up it?

Clearly, the corners somehow make it easier for him, as I guess he can "push off" on the two opposing walls in the corner. Suggestions I was given were 1) to stand a (slippery) PVC pipe in each corner (but since the floor of my yard is cement, and not very level at that, my fear is that the pipe won't stay put, and will keep falling over) 2) to get a few loose bamboo poles, tie them into a bundle, and stand them in the corner (which would obviously be more attractive than PVC, but again, it could easily fall over). I though of maybe getting some kind of hanging streamers, or long wind-chime/garden ornaments, and suspending them from the top of each corner hanging down, to sort of "throw the cat off" when he's trying to jump.

Any other suggestions? I don't want to put my cat in a cage, as to me it sort of defeats the purpose of letting him move freely in the yard. And I don't want him on a leash, as he could get tangled up/choke.

Could he build something decorative to go around the other corners? Possibly something similar to the Cat Fence-In system which curves inward over the walls to keep the cat from climbing out over it? Can't think of what else could be done to cement walls.

What about the fence in system. It is like chain link fencing that curves inward to keep the cat from going over the wall. Not sure if it would go on cement or brick but you could look. Not sure of its true name but it goes on top of fencing and goes up and the curves over toward the ground so the cat gets to the top and then can't go any further cause the fence curves over his head. That might deter the little guy
