How to protect an outside cat?

Aristocats Oct 14, 2003 03:16 PM

Greetings. In my neighborhood, there are 6 families who share an outside cat. He's outside partially by his choice, partially because he HATES other cats and will fight to severe injury with another cat. He's got covered shelter, warm beds, food, fresh water, a collar with a tag. But, is that doing enough? The problem with finding him a home is he'd need a home with someone who was VERY used to cats, yet had no cats and would be happy with only one cat. He seems happy enough outside, stays mostly in the 6 yards that he's found to be safe.

Actually sounds like he has it pretty good. 6 families who love him, plenty of food, shelter, water....sounds like he has it made for an outside kitty. I can see finding him an inside home would be a problem. Has he gotten his shots and been neutered?? Those are the only other suggestions I have for him at this time.

Oh yes, he is neutered and has all his shots. Goes in every 6 months to the vet for a check up, since he's got a rough life. Vet says for an outside only cat, he's pretty healthy, if a bit ratty and battered from all his fights. So far, he's negative for feline leuk and FIV(? it's in a combo test my vet does) and we check that every year. His first titer on FIP(I think, I may be mixing things up) was good, so he's been vaccinated for that every 6 months.

He doesn't seem to have a favored house to visit, otherwise we'd all go together and get a cat fence installed, so he had one yard to stay in that's safer.

Oh well, it's working ok for him, guess I'll try not to worry about him.
