i'm losing my patience

Does anyone have any ideas on how to teach our autistic child how to behave appropriatly with the cats? With animals in general really. Wen he was little he was great with critters, but now, not so much. It's becoming a constant battle.-- Jennifer

In most cases [Harlan] Ellison goes around the pit, jumps over it...or jumps right into it, on purpose, avoiding major injury either by his own talent, the grace of god, or a combination of the two.

I know that dealing with an autistic child is difficult. And although I deal with children with mental health needs in my work, I really don't have a lot of experience with autism. I have asked a co-host for help for you as she may be better able to answer your question. Does your child have a special school or Dr. that he sees? Could they help you?? Let us know how it is going.

We're trying to get him into a special school now, and we're on a waiting list for a psychologist & psychiatrist, but as of rght now, we have very little help with his problems. Thanks for responding.-- Jennifer

Jennifer,
To help we need to know what he is doing with the cats. Does he handle them roughly, throw them down.........
I'll ask my friend that works at a school for children with autism and let you know what she says. Give me a couple of days.

It's hard to explain. He is overly rough when playing with them, when he has a meltdown, he will kick out at them, purposly try to step on their tails, and set heavyish toys down on them. He chases them and then tries to jump over them, with he truly doesn't have the gross motor skills to do. He does things hat he knows scre them, especially Othello, who hisses every time my son enters the room. When we first got Ellison, we had hi separated in th bathroom. My son went in to use the bathroom and atfer using the toilet, dipped Ellison in it. It's a constant need for vigilence around here, because WE WILL NOT tolarate this. Luckily the cats do have one room that they can get away from him in, where he's not allowed.-- Jennifer

She says it's hard because every child that has autism is so different. She says to be firm and make sure he looks you in the eye when you are talking to him. (I know you already know all this). She said it will be hard for him to comprehend that he is hurting the animals. That you need to try to redirect him when he starts misbehaving. I'll ask some others. Glows to you.

Thanks, Jaime. By the way, I emailed you back the other day and it came back to me- said your mailbox was full. No school breaks here until spring and honestly, thank the gods for that. We are starting to get respite again, for the first time in 4 years. He's going this weekend for an overnight-- wahoooo! Baby cats are good.-- Jennifer

Thanks for letting me know Jennifer. It says that but it's something else. The admin is trying to fix it. I think it is working ok today. Not sure when I will be back on here. I have skiing tonight, tomorrow allergist, Friday doctors then going to watch my sister compete at a track meet in Boston. I will try to check email tomorrow morning.
