banning declawing

seter16 Aug 19, 2004 10:13 AM

Are there any groups trying to ban declawing in this country? I know there are quite a few countries in Europe that do. I just adopted a kitten a few months ago and the shelter that I adopted him from makes you sign a sheet saying you will NOT declaw the cat, I think thats great. No one wants their furniture ripped apart, but there are ways to get your cat to stop and use a scratch pad or anything else. I know a lot of people decided to declaw their cats even BEFORE they have a problem with scratching. I have to kittens and once in a while they stray from the scratch pad, when we catch them we tell them NO and they stop, we always pick them up and put them at the pad. But that hardley happens. My opinion is that if you worry more about your furniture than the animal you just commited to take care of, then you should give it to someone who will truely care for it and not put it through that kind of pain. But yes that is just my opinion. This is not meant to offend anyone who choses to declaw their cat, I'm just looking out for the little kitties who are just doing what they were made to do. Be cats.

I don't agree! At lot of places if you rent make you get your cat declawed. So what your saying is I should get rid of my cats, instead of keep them in a loving home just because I have to declaw them.

I am sure that there are groups that are trying that. I have 18 cats. 2 are declawed and 16 are not. Used to be that if you had a cat and it was inside, declawing was just expected. When the cat got fixed it also got declawed and that was just the way it went. We are away from that now. I think it remains a personal decision that requires much thought before being done. But would rather a cat have a home and be declawed than be kicked out of its home with claws for ruining furniture or scratching the baby.

Thats ok if people dont agree, I'm just starting a topic, which is what this website is about. Its good to get other peoples opinions and different ways to look at an issue, which is what I'm doing. No I never knew about the renting situation, so forgive me. I'm just saying, once again in my opinion, that maybe there are other ways around it. Its just that I know lots of people that dont think about the animal they are brining into the house or research it, and then when a cat scratches ONCE, its off to the vet and get clipped. I guess you have to see the situations I have seen, I did NOT personally attack anyone or tell anyone here they are doing something wrong. and thats fine if no one agrees.

All opinions are welcome here and discussion is nice. Sometimes you actually learn something.
