What do you feed your cats?

PHWildCat Feb 14, 2005 06:45 PM

Yes, it would be me again. Trying to get things moving around here. What do you feed your cats? Mine get a variety as their ages are from 17 years old to just over a year. We serve Iams Hairball, Science Senior, Kitten Chow and Friskies. All are dry and free fed. They also all get 1/3 of a can of canned Friskies every morning. And of course the occasional treat and some of Mommy's food too. Not that I would ever spoil a pet What do you feed????

Well I feed dry kibble. The brand is Nutro Natural choice. I have fed it for the last six years. I am thinking a change might be in order. I am leaning towards the Felidea. It has less grains and is about the same price as Nutro. I looked into innova but found it way to expensive.

If I can't pronounce it, they are not eating it. And the Felidae sounds like a rare disease of some sort, probably related to fleas Teehee!!!

Jaime, I agree the Felidae seems like good stuff, but our cats wouldn't eat it at all. My friend tried it and her cats love it so, go figure. To answer the question at hand, I change their diets pretty frequently, since I figure it provides better nutrition that way, plus I just can't seem to make up my mind, however, what they really seem to eat the best for me is grociery store dry kibble (I know, it breaks my heart too!), but when you have so many cats the mob rules ya know? I've been free feeding 9 Lives dry, Kit-n-Kaboodle dry and Whiskas dry, alternatly. I'd rather feed wet, but right now we can't afford the 500 or so cans per month. I'd love to feed them premium again, but they won't eat most of them for very long.-- Jennifer

Where did this cat come from??

My kitties get the best in my opinion. Everyone gets a lunch of canned Wellness, and I like to switch up the varieties, giving them chicken, turkey, chicken and herring, and turkey and salmon on different days. They love it! They also get to free feed 2 cups of Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Sould everday. Kola also gets either a late night dinner or an early morning breakfast of pro-plan canned. I like feeding them the canned because it helps with their coats, and they love the crunchies too. I heard that the reason cats take low quality food over high quality is the amount of sweetners in it or something else they use just to make it taste better.

It's the salt, actually. Like I said though, as much as I dislike giving it to them, the mob rules on certain issues, when there are alot of them.-- Jennifer

My boys are free fed dry food. 2/3 Nutro Natural Choice Senior and 1/3 Science Diet Senior Hairball Formula. Seems to be what works best with them. When I deviate, both either gain together or lose weight together, depending on the new brand. The hairballs stay down best with this mix, too.

I had them on Science Diet for a long while. The rescue organization I got one cat (Sage) from even called me to check if I was, but I grew a little suspicious that maybe they were getting a bit of financial support from SD to do so. Not that I had anything against it, but my other cat tends to throw up most kibble, and I really have no way of feeding them separately with my 1br apartment's lack of doors. The vet said suggested keeping Maggie on wet, but she gets so darn picky with wet food flavors, and it's expensive. And then Sage ends up eating most of it and gaining weight.

So I tried Purina One's Weight Management, which is mostly turkey. Have had them on it for about 6 mos now. Both cats love it. Maggie doesn't throw it up as much because the kibble is very small, and they seem very healthy. Coats are glossy, no sicknesses, no weight gain. So I'm pretty happy with that.

I have fed my kitties a raw homemade diet since 1986. I use the recipes in Dr. Pitcairn's book, but I don't use grains... they get a very small amount of veggies instead.

I feed my kitten Eukanuba dry food. I also add some Iams wet food in the pouch (she won't touch canned food, lol) and raw meat occasionally as a treat.

Jed (1 1/2 year-old Bengal) and Mariah Kitty (7 month old white/gray monster) are eating Innova Evo dry. When I adopted Mariah the pet supply store recommended Iams. I knew Iams was really overrated, so we rotated other brands like Royal Canin, Chicken Soup...Cat Lover's Soul, but they really took to Innova. I like that it doesn't contain all those by-products and absolutely no grains, like you get in the cheaper food.
