Do Soft Paws work?

lovidentity Jul 21, 2005 12:53 AM

Hello~ has anyone used something called "softpaws"? they seem to be spreading in the market and I guess they are fairly new (?) I haven't used them yet, but I was wondering if they they on the cat's claws...if so, they would be a great alternative to declawing ...

I've heard mixed reviews on this. I guess it depends on the cat - some cats do chew them off, but a lot of them do just fine.

My cat was VERY determined but was never able to chew them off. JMO. -- Jennifer

Yes, they do work. I used to use them on my cat, Psycho, back in 1997. The only problem, is that they can still pull at the threads in furnature or the tatters of a linolium floor where they have already scent marked and partially destroyed. That seems to be the case especially if they are a more destructive cat. In other words, yes they keep the cat from scratching, absolutly, but they don't keep it from 'pulling' at things. They are very easy to use and definatly worth trying.-- Jennifer

I too, have heard mixed reviews. Some swear by them and others say they didn't work for them.

I've been using them on my two kittens (now almost 11 months old) for months now. I love them. Yes...sometimes they do remove one or two. My Husband and I gang up on them once a week and check them for missing ones. I have him hold the cat and I clip and replace any missing ones. These two have totally refused to learn not to scratch things they shouldn't even though we used all the recommended techniques. So the Soft Paws were furniture savers since there is no way they were getting declawed.

I do believe there are cats that are more difficult to put them onto then others....but we have just never taken no for an answer....they kinda get the message that it doesn't matter if they don't like being held to have them put on...they have to tolerate it anyhow.

Good luck!
