Outdoor cat

shanrae83 Aug 20, 2005 11:45 AM

I want to adopt a cat/kitten to be exclusively outdoors. I know that most people discourage this, but I already know this is what I want. That being said, I want to make sure I don't get a kitten too young to be able to protect himself. What is the youngest age I could go and the cat be able to defend himself outside? I was thinking 5/6 months...I was thinking that the cat should already be spayed/neutered so that he/she wouldn't have to be outside right after surgery. Any thoughts or advice about this?
Thanks!

Do you have an inclosure to keep him warm or dry? If you really want an outside cat try looking into rescue groups that have cats that they aren't able to place inside a home due to behavior issues. I know there are a lot of places that have barn cats that need homes. I would look for a cat that is around a year old. Make sure the cat is spayed or neutered.
Good luck.

First I guess I have a question. Why do you want a cat, if it is to be outside by itself and not with you? Since you have already decided that is what you want, I think it should be a cat who was already outside and is used to it and is 1 year old or above. Kittens are too small to defend themselves and unless they were raised outside, they have not a clue what is dangerous and what isn't. Expect only 5 or so years out of your pet because that is about the longest an outside cat lives as a rule. Also, make sure that your cat has all his/her shots and is spayed/neutered. The kitty also needs a shelter (like a dog house with bedding) of some type, food and water available as well.
