3 options....

WeWantClawz Oct 06, 2005 01:14 PM

Ok, Christmas this year, I'm going home for a week. The kids (cats and their hamsters) have 3 options, and I'm not sure which is best...

1. Go with. They don't mind traveling, but it is a long trip (8-9 hours driving) for them to be in carriers. Most of them have been to "grammas" before and like visiting. It's the cheapest option, and it would mean I could deal with their medications and such as needed. But, it's probably a lot of stress on them, even if they can't say so.

2. Board at the vets. They know our kennel assistants at work, and like them. They'd also get very good medical care and I wouldn't worry at all about them getting their meds right. They'd have plenty of room, last time they had to stay, they just set up in an exam room on their own and had the run of the room and one of the halls. But, they'd have to move and it's probably a lot of stress - even if they act happy.

3. In home pet sitting. I don't know, for some reason, this really just seems to be my least favorite. I know that if I leave and come back 24 hours later, Sadie will hide for another 24 hours and I'm not sure she'd come out for her fluids. I figure Mike would be out and social for his insulin, but I'm not sure. It's not like him to hide for any reason.

And I guess the 4th option would be to mix and match any of the first 3 to suit everyone. CiCi, Dazzle, Mike and Sadie could stay at the clinic and the rest of the gang would be fine at home.

I don't know, I've never left the babies for a week! For me, 3 days is a LONG time to leave the kids alone.

Thanks!

That would be a major reason that I don't travel. On the rare occasion that I have to be away, I am lucky that I have a very good friend who will take care of them for me. In your case, I think I would first narrow it down to 2 choices, kennel or gramma's house. With their medical needs, you don't want a pet sitter to have to crawl all over the house to catch them or them scared by some stranger chasing them all over the house. At least at a kennel they are confined and can be observed and treated. But if you are going to worry and stew the whole week and not enjoy yourself, pack the furkids up and take them with you
