An encyclopedia consists of ten volumes (sitting next to each other, in order, on a shelf). Each volume contains one thousand pages. Excluding the covers of each volume, how many pages are between the first page of the encyclopedia and the last?

nope, you are. when you flip around books and have the spines face out it would make those pages not the first and last in the first and last book so you have to take away 2000.

The first volume of the set of ten will have page one all the way to the right of the book when sitting on a shelf. That means that all the pages to the left of that book will not be part of the count. The same works for volume 10 having the last page is the furthest to the left when sitting in a row on a shelf.

Put ten books in a row on a shelf and you will see what I mean.

Eight thousand. When books sit on shelves, the first page of the book is the rightmost page, and the last page is the leftmost page. So you can't count the pages in the first and last volumes.

Yeah, and besides i didn't see anything about turning them around an besides I don't see what difference it would make which way they are facing, unless you count a whole book as a page and that dosen't make any sense, cause then it would be 8 not 8000...
