I think it needs distilled water, mainly because of the minerals, etc. We're using a Walgreens ultrasonic humidifier and I believe the instructions indicate that it needs distilled. Besides, I'm afraid my tap water would harm my frogs and plants.
Distilled or R/O water is best. Although many people still use tap water and claim no damage after a year's use, I think it would be best to err on the safe side and use the pure stuff.

mike, what size nano reef do you have?
I have not used one for frogs yet, but use on in my kids room in the winter. I can tell you that tap water is a real pain to clean off the mister, and has to be done about every month or so. Now on a frog tank it may not run nearly as long as all night in a kids room so might not be as bad. I plan to try one soon.
