Dragon eating tail

Drifter Oct 13, 2003 11:20 AM

My son has 2 bearded dragons (1.1) in a 55 gallon aquarium. They've been living happily there for about 3 years. All of a sudden the female starting biting the males tail. She has chewed it down to a 2" bloody stump. My son decided to tell me about it last night. I immedialty seperated them and am taking him to the vet this afternoon. Anyone have any ideas as to why after all that time she would start biting his tail??

Thank-you

I would definitely take him to see the vet. A bite up that far on the tail is going to be needing some sort of antibiotic to prevent infection. Most people even breeders do not keep male & females pairs together full time other then the short time needed for breeding. What it is is a show of dominance either from the female towards the male, or possible the female had enough of the males dominance. You haven't had any eggs yet? I would think by keeping them together you would have had problems long before this. Keep him separate from now on and I would suggest for now in an extra clean enclosure with paper or something that won't let dirt get in the cut. Make sure he has all the proper lights and everything. He needs a permanent cage alone. Good Luck I hope he heels ok.
