Question about a smaller leo

Hefe Oct 13, 2003 12:32 PM

I currnetly have 3 females housed toghther out of a group of 4 that ive had for almost 2 years. They were bought at petco (I wont buy there again) and are doing well for the most part. One of the females is smaller and skinnier that the other 3. My question is is there any way that only the one could have a bacterial infection or something? I would have thought If that was the cause that the others would have picked it up as well. What is everyones thoughts on this? Thanks!1

Most likely she is getting bullied and/or losing competition for food. Usually when a leo is kept with larger leos it will get disproportionally smaller. Try seperating her into her own enclosure and she if you can put weight on her. She may have a low-level case of worms of something that is contributying to failure to thrive as well, you can always get a fecal to check for that.

I would set her up in her own cage for awhile. Make sure she has plenty of hiding spots, as she is probably a little stressed already. After she reaches the same size as the other ones, you should be able to put her back with the group. However, I would recommend changing your set-up ( re-decorate ) and placing them all in at the same time. Good luck.

I bought a male leo in feb. He was growing then after a few months stopped. I had him checked out by my vet. They found some pinworms but nothing major to cause concern since most reptiles have some pinworms. He asked where I got it and we talked about petco and their animals. He told me that my leo would probably stay small because there are many animals that pet stored get that are inbreed so much that it causes problems in health and growing. He said that my male but have been a clutch from this. To this date my leo is 40grams and atleast a year old. I am not sure.

Just get him/her checked and seperate it until you do.

Good luck
