Veterinarian

kaseys412 Aug 10, 2006 06:36 PM

I recently moved to Auburn, NY and I am looking for a good Veterinarian. There are three in the area I believe but I was looking for some references, if anyone uses any of these local vets please let me know which one you recommend. Thanks!

Hi, perhaps you could ask people at work or your neighbors what vet they use.

Try chatting up anyone you see walking their dawg - how many people have you met that didn't like to talk about their animals?

Just be sure to ask why they like their vet. Several of my friends use the same vet, a cat specialist with solid credentials. And a sharp tongue, an ever changing, unhappy office staff...I've been in her office several times and never came away feeling at peace with the experience. She fine for my friends, not for me.

If one of the practices has more than one vet, you may want to ask the front desk (when you call in) if anyone specializes in cat in the practice. The past few years, I've specifically asked if anyone specializes in geriatric cats and have had wonderful luck with two vets that really know their stuff when it comes to older cat issues. When the first left last year, I just took them in to whichever vet was available the first time after she left. Had a bad experience -- the vet didn't know common Senior cat issues and admitted she was more of a dog person. She gave me some questionable advice (contradicted what the specialist had discussed with me). The next time I went back, I asked if they had a vet on staff that specialized in geriatric cats and they referred me to my current vet -- she'd actually just came on board and replaced the one I had been using. It pays to ask -- my new vet is wonderful and has done a great job this past year. On top of Senior issues.

I DO like the vet I have now but whenever I see someone in the supermarket or petstore in the cats department I ask them who their vet is!
