Stinky!

kittyromeo Aug 10, 2006 08:43 PM

Stinky has been getting fishy slurries the past week - kinda like the feline version of the breakfast shake.

This photo was taken last night. Check out the forming belly bump! She hasn't been comfortable enough to streach out like this in a couple of months. We might get back up to 7 lbs soon at this rate!

Purrs,
Elizabeth

She is so lucky to have you trying so hard to keep her health up! I am glad you are making progress -- such a relief to you. Is the shake smelly? The title sounds smelly. LOL.

When Stinky goes anorexic, she won't eat solids. So I water down canned cat food, mash it up until its like runny oatmeal. This week I've added a little olive oil (not corn oil - corn might be part of the problem) because the higher the fat content, the more she seems to eat. If we have to keep this up, I'll be adding a supplement from the vet soon.

But getting the slurries into her helped - she feels good enough that she is eating dry kibble again.

Ah, OK. I did this for Pookey after his amputation surgery as I had to feed him by hand (with a needle-less syringe squirting in the mouth). I called it "watered down cat food" not fishy slurries. LOL! You had me thinking of a fish flavored milk-shake and I was getting queasy! One thought -- most vets sell a wet cat food that is packed with nutrients for sick cats. It is recommended to help get cats back to health. Might be something you can ask about -- the most popular brand I've seen is Science Diet AD. Only sold at vets. Sick cats go nuts over it more so than other wet foods. It is what I used with Pookey that I watered down and hand fed him. Helped him keep on weight and nutrients. Prior to discovering the Science Diet AD, I'd watered down 100% chicken baby food. Beech Nut has a Stage 1 baby food that is nothing but chicken and chicken broth (no additives). But, the Science Diet AD is pure gold to sick cats or cats that need to put quality weight back on.

That's what I was doing for Stink! The vet tech used the word "Slurry" when she was telling what consistantcy to aim for.

We started with the SD A/D then went to SD D/D (venision) both of which she hated. So next was baby food. She still threw up. (But it looks like poultry is the problem) so I went to people premium tuna. That worked, until I subbed Chicken of the Sea for Bumble Bee. Acted like I was feeding her garbage. So I went to the old stand-by Fancy Feast. Finally got some results.
