cat deterrent?

ThreeCalicos Aug 11, 2006 09:32 PM

A friend has asked me if there's any sort of deterrent to keep a neighbor's cats from using her flower beds as a litter box. They refuse to keep the cats indoors and she doesn't want to put anything out to harm the cats. (Hers are indoor cats.) She's tried something she bought at Petsmart but it didn't work. Seems like I've seen posts about a successful treatment but all I can remember is using big cat dung from the zoo. She doesn't think that a good solution. Can anyone offer help or suggestions? Any ideas appreciated! Thanks, Katc

Hmmmmmm:Well a person ask me one time where does a bear relieve himself in the woods and i said anywhere he wants to.
You got to remember this is just a animal that has to go someplace.Just imagine yourself being that cat and had to go what would you do.
Maybe putting a litter box close by will solve your problem.Poor Little kitty.

Seem to remember a neighbor growing up that used mothballs in his garden, but they are so toxic....

A solid squirt from the garden hose would do wonders I'm sure.

I wonder if you can get scent of a big animal. Deer scent is sold, I wonder what else you can get? Might be less messy then "gifts" from the zoo - if you could even get them.

We didn't have to worry about the cats in the garden when I was a kid - the sand box was just a few feet away. Cats always go where it feels good to the paws. I'd be tempted to dump a bag of sand in the neighbor's yard!

I posted about moth balls on this over in Cats Let People Chat where the same question is posed. I've heard moth balls are a good deterrent to cats...
