ambers is having diarrhea

janome Aug 18, 2006 10:21 PM

thanks everyone who replied to ambers photo. she is an active little thing. but now she is having diarrhea. its been 4 years since i had a kitten. she had a check up wed and since the leukimia test was neg the vet gave her a leukimia vax. so it could be that causing diarrhea now. or the wet food or the stress of a new home or worms. sooooo many things can be causing it. i'm going to take a sample to the vet monday, they are not there tomorrow, to rule out worms. she isn't fat like she has worms but since she probably didn't get enough to eat before she came to the shelter she is a little under weight. she weighed 1 pound 10 oz wed. well, i was just wondering if anyone had ideas on the loose stools. it was normal at one time. yesterday i think it was. don't remember really. anyway thanks.

Many times it is a change in diet that can cause it. Once you get her on something steady, she will hopefully be fine. They probably fed her a mix of foods at the SPCA and the food you are feeding her is a switch... Your vet can give you more advise or if it is another problem, but I know changing diets can cause diarrhea... She should pull out of it, but watch it closely with the vet so she doesn't become dehydrated. Down the road, any time you introduce a new food, mix it in with the old for a few days for a gradual switch... Hard to do so in this case as you got her as is, but keep it in mind for down the road when introducing new foods to her...

Since you can't get to the vet until Monday, you may want to back off the wet food some for now. It could be stress and a combo of things, but a little less wet and more dry over the weekend might help. If the diarrhea is chronic, you'll need to get her to the vet.

thank you tammy. i was thinking the same thing. i didn't give her any wet since yesterday. just the dry. she is acting like a little motor car racing around so she's not that bad off. i see her drink all the time. she wants to nurse in my hair! i was laying on the floor with her and she just kept nuzzling in my hair. aww! she misses her mommy. but i pet her and hold her and talk to her and tell her i'm her mommy now and everything will be alright.

she did have a little bit of diarrhea overnight but nothing since. thats a good thing i think.

Hi There,

I doubt that the diarrhea is related to the vaccine. My guess is that it is due to change of diet, since she was so recently adopted. A deworming would be a good idea also, just to be safe.

Please let us know how Ambers does and what the vet says.

Regards,

Hopefully Amber's diarreah was a temporary condition - many kittens get the runs from time to time. You are very wise to stay on top of the situation, however and it's good that you are prepared to go to the vet if needed. Keep us posted!

Glad the diarrhea is better. If it isn't one thing, it's another, yes? It is common for cats to pick up URIs at shelters and they don't always show up right away. I'd keep an eye on her sneezing and if it gets worse, continues for long, or there is a mucus discharge, call the vet. An antibiotic can clear it right up and if not, it can become dangerous if it is a URI and gets worse... Both of mine came from the factory (SPCA) with URIs back 100 years ago when I adopted them... It took a few days to show up and pick up speed. If it is URI, it may pass to your other cats, something to watch.
