~ Beautiful But Bewildering ** Lady C.Vestigum ~

eve Oct 13, 2003 01:00 PM

Chia my pretty girl, still appears gravid, been a long time AGAIN ! Never know what this lady is doing. I don't know if she will lay, or reabsorb. SHEEESH, this one drives me nuts, I don't like when shes gravid, anymore, makes me a bit nervous. We will see ! I would LOVE to see their offspring , Eve

I currently have a female C. vestigium which has been gravid for two months now. Despite obvious egg bulges along her flanks, she has shown no interest in ovipositing. This same female has successfully laid clutches in the past. Makes me wonder if egg "retention" is a means for some female Crotaphytus to reduce the risk of egg-binding when preparing to oviposit infertile clutches...

Chia also has been gravid now atleast for the same amount of time 2 months (or longer,) BUT... she is showing a simular pattern as last time. Her appetite has decreased if not stopped for a week or more, just like before. And now she did dig abit yesterday. She is under her big rock early today, so I will keep my eye on her. But I'm getting quite a learning experience with the C. Vestiguim. LOL I hope this does not harm them.
Your theory sounds good, you may be right. Just seems so long to retain them. Must take alot out of them. Some days Chia looks so tierd. Other days just fine. Let me know how your girl makes out. I also will let you know (AGAIN). Eve

...female is doing at the moment. She most definately cycled through the gravid coloration, was NOT mated, and became quite large with an obvious load of developing eggs. However, she would NOT make any attempt at nesting at the appropriate time, no suggestive behavior such as digging or unusual animation. She became slightly less active, had a reduced appetite, and showed a few signs of a drain taking place on her system (reduced tail reserves and noticible muscle mass loss). From there, she became slightly more active, her appetite has increased a little, and her orange coloration has all but vanished. She seems to be slowly losing the distended appearance in the abdomen, and is adding flesh back in the areas that were depleted, most noticibly her tail. She is only taking perhaps 5 mealworms per feeding, which is not very much for a lizard of her size and activity level. My impression is she is metabolizing the infertile ova and getting some nutritional benefit from the process. Very frugal if true, and beats the heck out of the risks of normal laying.

...has recovered enough to keep escaping from the big tub we were nursing it in. As of today, it seems to think its the herp room lizard at large. "Use the litter box and you can stay out" LOL. The "other bigger one" is already making us watch its weight, it lives to eat now. That's the reason the "dead" one can't go into the big enclosure.... The big one tries to EAT anything we put in there! LOL. Seriously, she tracks your hands from the moment you come into the room. We had to begin raising hisser roaches two weeks ago...
