Urinary Tract Infection

crbovee Sep 19, 2006 06:57 AM

About 10 weeks ago, Miko had a severe UTI and was at the vet hospital for 3 days because he wasn't eating and couldn't keep anything down. He has been on antibiotics since then (6 weeks on Baytril and 4 on Clavamox). Every two weeks he goes for a urinalysis and it shows he still has bacteria. Is this normal? I just worry about giving him antibiotics for so long. Has anyone else been in a situation like this? Miko will be a year old next month and he goes in for another check up tomorrow.

Thanks,
Caitlin

Your vet would know best, but I have not heard of 6 weeks solid on antibiotics. Unless, the first round didn't work. Stanley has had a couple UTIs and his have cleared up with two weeks of antibiotics. If memory serves Baytril is a more powerful antibiotic... What has your vet said? Maybe others have had cats with longer UTIs...

Hi There,

Either this infection isn't sensitive to the antibiotics your cat has been on, or the sample taken isn't sterile in the first place.

Your vet should take the next sample and send it to a lab for a culture. This will determine exactly what antibiotics will work on the infection. The sample must be taken using a needle and syringe to be considered sterile.

It makes no sense to keep an animal on an antibiotic for so long that isn't even helping. The only thing it might do is cause the cat to be resistant to that antibiotic in the future.

Regards,
PHKitkat

As I understand it, the vet switched Miko from the Baytril to the Clavamox because the Baytril wasn't getting rid of the infection. The last time he went in, the bacteria count was way down and this last round was to finish it off. I was just concerned because it does seem like a long time to be on antibiotics. Thanks for your help!
