Pooh-fire

JaimeMarie Oct 27, 2006 03:37 PM

As most of you know Gabby has had pooh-fire for a little over a week. The vet checked for worms. She had none so had me give her prescription canned food. Guess what that has made it worse instead of better. So I have not fed her anything yet today. I can't remember I think someone said canned pumpkin or was it rice with ground chicken would help?
Any suggestions greatly apprieciated.

Thanks

Probably chicken and rice.

When my friend's dogs got sick (major runs, vomit, and dehydration) after eating dark meat turkey and skin after Thanksgiving a couple years ago, I remember rice was a big part of what the vet had her feed them. It was a very very bland diet. It may have been just rice or rice made w/chicken broth. I know rice was the bulk of it. To get her to eat rice, you'd probably need chicken broth or chicken pieces. Just be sure it is breast meat only w/no skin.

As for canned pumpkin, not sure that is best. The vet recommended that for Stanley as his stools were hard. It works as a mild stool softner to keep things regular. Pumpkin might make things even worse as it is a softner.

Since you are in touch w/your vet on this anyway, ask her.

Thank you Tammy. I'll call the vet's office back on Monday. I am still getting to know this vet. I have only been there twice now. So not trusting yet.

Hi Jaime,

Chicken and rice would be good, and maybe cottage cheese, if your kitty likes it.

You can even get chicken and rice baby food if you don't like to cook. It has worked for my babies in the past.

Jamie I sure hope Gabby feels better soon.
I remember canned pumpkin as a recommendation for hairballs.

So the Chicken and Rice probably is better.

I remember the vet telling my mom once that the canned pumpkin works as a soother for the stomach and digestive tract.. If her little digestive system is upset it might help calm down whatever is going on in there. Too much I would imagine.. might backfire and soften her stools ever more (if that's possible) but I think a little bit.. maybe a teaspoon once or twice a day would be good.

Update. Gabby hadn't gone to the bathroom for a while. I was getting worried. So today I bought the pumpkin. I gave her a little bit she didn't eat much of it. But 2 hrs later she went to the bathroom and it's NORMAL! Smelly but normal yippie. Crash and Mya helped themselves to the rest of the pumpkin. Hopefully no one else gets sick for a while. Vet bills are expensive!

Thanks everyone.
