Housing in terrarium

Dt Oct 13, 2003 02:09 PM

I am in the process of setting up both 30g and 90g Terraria. I'll be growing several mosses, lichen, and forest mushrooms...as well as some rare ferns and orchids. Substrate will be primarily peat, but will be carpeted with the mosses and ferns. Humidity will be 60-70 percent, and their will be adequate ventilation. I can easily provide the temp avariations required. Can a corn thrive in this environment, or is this a bad idea?

A snake might be too rough on the plants...?

Most of my snakes would destroy those plants in like, two minutes flat. I can hardly keep the fake ones from being destroyed. Not to metion it would seems like it would be hard to keep stinky snake mess off the moss.

Also I think with the higher humidity all the time you might be risking a respitory infection in the snake.

The only snakes I can think of that might not demolish your set up would be some of the vine snakes or smaller arboreal boas. They make better display animals than "pets" in my honest opinion. Corn snakes will move things around and don't really need an elaborate set up to keep them healthy. You could put a Brazilian Rainbow Boa in there, but it will definitely rearrange the "furniture" once it gets some size on it. In a display tank like what you're describing, I'd go with arrow frogs or some of the day geckos. You might never see them... but they'll be a lot easier on the plant life. Post some pics when you're done on the caging forum I'd love to see how it turns out.

I kinda thought that would be the response I'd get. Thanks for the confirmation. Most of the plants I'm putting in there are epiphitic and are going to be mounted on cork bark, but your point about the humidity is a good one. I'll just stick with Dart frogs. I've had the snake since early August and she's doing so well, I dont want to do anything to compromise that.

I'm taking pictures of each step of the process, and I'll be sure to post some. I'd love to get some constructive criticism.
