grooming your cat....

gocatgo Mar 02, 2007 02:38 PM

I read on this board a year or two ago about a vet recommending combing the fur backwards, then to comb it frontwards to get out a lot more of the undercoat that has built up over the winter. Of my four cats, Samantha likes it the best. KatyKatt comes in second. She'll tolerate it for a while then when I get to the thick undercoat around her butt and legs, she'll start objecting. When she starts hissing and fighting it, Samantha will come over and arch her back up for me to comb her some more. heehee. She's so cute, she'll just roll over on her back, spread her legs apart so that I can do her belly too and be cleaning her face while I'm combing her, purring all the while. What a sweetie!

Simba sort of likes it as well. He's a bit impatient though and tires of it quickly. Katrina just takes off for parts unknown until the grooming session is over.

How do your cats react when you groom them?

Pookey needs grooming more (medium fur that likes to mat from time to time) and Stanley has short fur that doesn't need it as much (has never had a mat).

However, as luck would have it, Stanley is CRAZY about being brushed. I have to brush him first, last, and several times in the middle... He is all over me when it is Pookey's turn. Pookey is OK with it, until I get near his hind leg (almost said legs there) or find a mat, then he is done... He starts to wander off and before I can get him, Stanley is throwing his body at me, meowing loudly the whole time...

It is funny, but that is how I got Stanley out from under the bed when I first moved to the condo. The ceilig fan (off) scared them so much as they had never seen one. They hid out for 24 hours and I knew I had to coax them out to eat, drink, and us the litter box. I sat at the end of the bed tapping the brush on the floor and Stanley eventually came out slinking really low... He was scared to death, but automatically responded to the tapping of the brush on the floor to get him to come out.

I wish Boris was like Stanley. I comb him - that is whenever I can get him to let me. However, since he has that russian-blue type fur, he doesn't shed much and takes very little combing. For some reason, even as a kitten, he did not like it. He does prefer the comb to a brush though. He definitely will not let you touch him with a brush - no matter how soft it is.

Crash likes to be groomed as long as I groom where she says to groom her. Gabby runs like heck and hides. Gabby is short furred so it's not a big deal.
I do need to trim Crash's pants again. More dingle berries. GROSS!
I think it's from the meds.

Quentin likes to be groomed. He gets excited whenever he sees the grooming brush. Sometimes, though, he gets over stimulated while being groomed and starts hitting me (without claws), or hitting the brush, then I have to discontinue until he settles down.

Star enjoys being groomed, but only for a couple minutes. She gets tired of it after awhile and then wants to be left alone.

Although both cats are short haired, Quentin's fur is thicker so he needs more grooming than Star does. He's also had problems with mats whereas Star has never had them.

Kasha DEMANDS to be brushed, she will follow hubby in the bedroom, jump on the bed and stare him down until he brushes her. If that does not work, she meows (sounds more like meh-meh)and pesters him until it is done. Smig gets brushed after her breakfast, but does not like the belly. She hisses, so he brushes her faster, she hisses, he brushes. It turns into a game of chicken. Hubby usually wins.

LOL!

Cute how many of us have the same story -- one cat that loves it and is crazy about it, and one cat that tolerates it for a while.

Franky LOVES grooming, but she's the one who almost never needs any done. She's a shorthair with a really light undercoat. She loves the rubber brush thing a friend gave us.

Rocky pouts thru grooming, but he tolerates it. He's also shorthair, but he's got more undercoat than Franky. I can usually get by with brushing him every other week or so and not have too much fur everywhere from him.

Ruckus likes the slicker brush, and that's it. He'll tolerate any grooming with that, but if I get out Franky's brush or a comb, he's hissing and running away. He's a shorthair also, but his undercoat is pretty heavy, tho' he's not really fluffy like some.

Danny likes the Furminator (sp?) - looks like a 10 clipper blade stuck on a handle basically. He's a medium hair, and his top coat is always nice and smooth, but his undercoat tends to build up - so the Furminator takes all that out. He'll tolerate combing also, tho' he's a little snotty about having his tummy done.

Sigh, and then the Murfinator - Murphy. I pay to have him lion clipped every 5 weeks. Grooming him isn't worth the hassle - he's a longhair with a very dense undercoat that mats within a day I think. He's also very sensitive with the mats, and if he gets one, he rips at it and won't let anyone groom it out. He's very happy with his lion clip, he stands on the table quite nicely apparently, and he comes home and prances around like he knows he's looking fine. If he's in the right mood, he does like his ruff gently combed out.

They are all ok with the nail trimming at least

Annie has hard, flat fur with little undercoat so of course she is crazy about being combed, brushed, whatever! Its not like she really needs it, so she is the cat who will pester for brushing, arching her back in bliss.

Its taken several years to desenistize Lizzy to brushing. She has enough undercoat for three cats. Belly is off limits, but I have a human, nubbed round brush she likes. I just have to drop it once in a while so she can kill it before continuing. I could knit a litter of kittens out of what the brush pulls out in an average evening!

Stink has really thin, fine hair. She gets all wide eyed about a little brushing, but someone else usually butts in and chases her off if I'm grooming. She sits on the sidelines watching, wondering what it is she is missing.

But when it comes to claw clipping, but BSM and I have to tackle Stink some days to get the job done - what a wild cat!

My Boy Cola the 4 month old suspected Maine Coon mix has lovely dense undercoat and loves to be brushed. He purrs like crazy until it catches his eye and he starts to pounce on it, then I have no chance.

His belly and chest are his favourite bits...our girl Pepsi is short hair and hates being groomed unless its just straight down her back...and deviation and you get hissed at as she storms off

This has been a great thread. After reading all the lovely and funny stories, it reconfirms why I love kittys.... What a great bunch of personalities we have in our homes...

I agree with you, this has been a great thread. I loved reading all of the member's responses. It looks as if all of our kitties are the same, one or two really love being groomed and then there's the one who will barely tolerate the grooming!

Tessies fur is rather short so a quick brushing is all she ever needs and she tolerates it well...
