Feeding a youngster

Rescuekitty1979 Mar 11, 2007 12:03 PM

Hi Everyone

My 4 month old baby cat Cola seems to be getting sick of kitten food. I have bought every variety of the meat and dry food to give him variety which has been fine until now.

I know that he's in a very important growth phase at the moment and needs the higher calorie food to help him grow but what I'm finding is he is leaving almost half a wet meal now (he gets 2 a day) and not eating many biscuits.

What he does do, however, is to eat quite a few of the biscuits we have out for Pepsi which are different kinds of adult complete biscuits and I've found if I give him one adult wet meal as well as his 2 half eaten kitten ones he wolfs that down too.

I was just wondering if there will be any negative effect on his health and general growth to feed additional adult food (which he is loving) as well as some kitten food (which he just seems to tolerate ) ?

I hate how for kittens, wet food-wise, there are only a few varieties as it seems he is turning his nose up more at the very processed meats and prefers those closer to natural fish and meats of the adult variety. His appetitie is very very healthy if I give him a lovely 90% natural adult meat pouch but very slow with the kitten food.

Any poinions would be much appreciated

By biscuits, to you mean dry food kibble -- little pieces of dry food?

I know in the US, there are brands specific for Adults, Seniors, and Kittens. But, there are also brands available for "all stages of a cat's life." For instance, I am pretty sure good old blue bag Purina Cat Chow is good for all stages of a cat's life. Which means, kittenhood to adulthood. What you may want to do is find a brand that is good for all stages of a cats life and mix it in with the probably better Kitten food that he should be eating... I'd make it primarily Kitten food with enough of the "all stage" food to get him to eat it...

It is a requirement on food bags in the US to say what stage it is for... Many are specific to kitten or adult, but there are some for all stages. I am pretty sure blue bag Purina Cat Chow is one of them...

The same may be well for wet food -- the disclaimer as to what stage and I'd bet there are some "all stage" foods out there you can mix w/wet kitten food.

With 21 cats it is hard to separate foods for various ages. I keep Purina Kitten Chow available for the smaller ones as well as Iams Hairball formula and Friskies dry. Kittens and cats can take their choice. As for canned, they get Friskies 1/3rd a can per cat daily from the day they start eating to the day they pass away. The canned only comes canned for cats and kittens and they all love it and they grow up just fine. Some like some flavors better than others but it all works out in the long run.
