Crash's chin again

JaimeMarie Mar 17, 2007 10:37 AM

Crash has been having problems with her chin. Two months ago on January 15th she had a sore on her chin. I didn't know anything was wrong with it until it burst open. The vet put her on an antibiotic for 7 days. It healed up and I thought everything was fine. Than February 23 it burst open again. I brought her to a different vet because I was visiting my parents. The vet took a scraping and tested for mouth bacteria. None was found. She said it wasn't in the right place to have anything to do with her teeth. She put her on Clavamox 62.5 two pills a day for ten days. Everything seemed back to normal. Than this morning I found it was open again. I can't make it to the vet's office today. The emergency vet is 80 miles away. We are in the middle of a winter storm. I have left a message at the first vet's office. When I bring her in on Monday what should I ask them to check for? Do you have any idea what could be causing this? This morning, I also washed it out with soap and warm water then put rubbing alcohol on it. She wasn't very happy with me when I did that. I know I shouldn't complain but 100 dollars a month really isn't in my budget. I just want Crash to be better and not have to go in once a month for this. I switched her bowl to cermic, and put a glass water bowl out for her. So hopefully that will help change something. Should I continue to wash her chin with rubbing
alcohol? How many times a day? I am thinking at least twice. I would put antibiotic cream on it but I don't have any. I could try to make it the 12 miles to town. I'm not sure if I want to go out in this weather. It snowed 7 inches last night, and now it is pouring out. Before that it was freezing rain and sleet. My road hasn't even been plowed.
If any one has any advice I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks

Ask your vet how bad can feline acne get - Romeo and Annie both had it - Annie it showed up as pus pockets and scabs. At first I thought she had been beat up by one of the other cats. Like some one had tried to disembowl her and she took it on the chin. Romes just had some bumps in the fur when you scritched his chin.

I think I cleaned Romes with hydrogen peroxide 2x a day for several days. Annie we just let heal since she was healthy and they cleared up fast. The big thing was I threw out their bowls and bought new. We had been using hard plastic picnic wear type bowls (they were human dishes) I thought since they weren't visably scratched, they couldn't harbor bacteria but they did. (ick!) I replaced them with some resturant style cermic white bowls I picked up at Target cheap. They only problem I've had with them the past several years is every human who has used one tells me they are too nice for the cats!

I'm not sure it's acne. Neither vet mentioned it when I brought her in. They said it looked like she got scratched. The weird thing it is in the same spot every time. Do you think a claw could be stuck in there?

Hi Jamie,
My Lily usto get that and my vet said it could be acne or allergy's possilby to food. First she had me change all our dishes to ceramic, no plastics. Once we did the dish change everything cleared up and we have not had any reoccurances.
She said is wasn't uncommon for cats to have a reaction to plastic.

Just an idea,

Thanks Cheri, I got rid of the plastic.

On a side note for everyone I found BETAGEN TOPICAL SPRAY - VETERINARY

(GENTAMICIN SULFATE WITH BETAMETHASONE VALERATE) that I used on Mya's stomach last winter. Do you think I can use it on Crash?

I would call the vet and ask about using the topical spray you have before using it. One problem with creams/sprays is cats lick it off if it is in an area they can reach -- and the chin is.

Stanley had a bad reaction to plastics early on and it took about two weeks for the chin to clean up after switching to glass.

Whether it is acne or a scratch, recommend peroxide over alcohol. Have used both at the vet's OK and found that alcohol stings an awful lot and causes drooling. Peroxide will gently clean and not sting her nearly as much.

Before you try too many home remedies or meds from other pets, I'd call the vet and see what they think...

Thanks Tammy,
I didn't use it. I have a call into the vet's office. I'm sure I'll be off to the vet tomorrow afternoon. Which stinks because I have a doctor's appointment at 3:15 so not sure when I'll get in there. Here chin seems to be healing already. So that is good.

Wow, if a reaction to plastics is so common in cats, I'm beginning to wonder if WE should be eating off of it!

Let us know how long it takes for Crash's chin to heal.

Good thing we wash our dishes between uses and don't let them sit out with food in them for days like we do for our pets with dry foood... I think the bacteria grows over time of being left out with food in it in room-temp.

Ditto. I had 4 plastic bowls for Romes when he was an only cat. (Currently I'm down to about a dozen cermic for 3 cats after breakage. I cleaned Target out when they went on clearance) With Romeo's delicate health, lack of time wasn't an excuse to give him a dirty bowl, so I made it easy on myself. They still got acne.

There is talk in Europe of phasing out certain types of plastic for home use since they release a chemical that builds up in our blood stream. Could feline acne be caused by trace chemicals released from their bowls? Who knows? But I'm surprised at how common acne seems to be even in our little group.

Very interesting. I don't wash their dry food dish out every day. I do it often, but not daily. I do wash any treat-dish they use as their treats are semi-moist. I also clean out their water dish daily...

That applied for plastic, too (they are using glass now). I always thought it was bacteria that built out with the dry food sitting in it all day long... But, you guys switched out bowls daily...

(don't be impressed - dishes are easy, since the baby arrived, I dump and scrub the litterbox once a week. Scooping requires a trip to the basement - way too far!)

No fair. I have to scoop daily. If I don't Miss. Gabby will go on the floor. She does ok over the weekends. I scoop Friday morning and scoop again Sunday night when I get back. But if I am home and haven't scooped she even will come and yell at me.

No no I didn't do it daily until Saturday Tammy. So it could be from that. Her chin is almost healed. Maybe she won't need to be on meds again.

I can tell you that already. It takes between 8 and 10 days to heal. This is my third round.
