So Confused !!

Rescuekitty1979 Apr 03, 2007 06:09 AM

Hey everyone

My baby Cola goes in to be neutered a week today and I just suddenly thought today about whether he might need an elizabethan collar on afterwards to prevent licking etc. The reason I was concerned is because he doesn't wear a collar yet so he can continue to grow without the hassle of a collar since he is indoor.

I called the vets office and was told that with him being male they dont need the collar on so all good....except I'm confused as she said that there are no stitches with males. How on earth do they heal ?? I'm really confused now

Hi There,

Don't be confused, it's really very simple

This is the procedure for neutering a cat:

The cat is given anesthesia, and once he is asleep, the surgical area is shaved and prepped with surgical scrub. A small incision is made into the scrotum, and the testicles are brought out, kind of "popped out", one at a time. The cords are tied off, and most of the cord, with testicle attached, is cut free. The resulting "knots" are simply pushed back into the scrotum and the incision, which is really small, does not need to be sutured.

If you like, I'll be happy to find some photos of the procedure for you.

Regards,
PHKitkat

Ah I feel a lot more at ease now, I was concerned he'd be leaking everywhere once I get him home. Pictures would be great, it'd be good to know what he might look like afterwards. Bless him, he's so woolly down there

Hi Again,

This site has some excellent pictures of both spaying and neutering in cats. You have to scroll down quite a bit to get to the photos, but you may want to read the info also.

The photos show the cord being tied off with suture material, but many vets just tie a knot in the cord instead.

Wow! That's really good to know. I've been making arrangments with my vet to get both my kittens neutered. They turned 6 months old on April 1st. Luckily for me, they haven't sprayed anything yet. They are indoor cats but I want to get them fixed anyway, just in case they get out for any reason.

They also love their crate. They'll play in it all day after I take it out.

Thanks for detailing the procedure as I was curious as to why everyone was saying that neutering males is so easy.
