1st Litter - How Long Between Kittens?

BlackHeartNY Apr 25, 2007 11:29 PM

A friend's kitty gave birth today to ONE kitty around 2:00 pm this afternoon. She's been watching her closely and said that Mom seems comfortable, but she's sure there's more kittens to come. My question is .. for a first litter, how long is typical between kittens? We've read on other forums that it could be anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours! If there's something wrong, how will we know?

It can be up to 24 hours. If Mom is in labor and nothing is happening then it is Vet time. She won't appear comfortable if she is having contractions. If she goes 24 hours with nothing happening, then I would have her Vet checked.

Well, I have some good news! This Mama Kitty is a wonder girl! After giving birth to one babe on April 25th, she went all through the next day and at 8:00 pm on April 26th, she gave birth to another kitty! But wait, that's not all! Sometime during the early hours of the NEXT day (April 27th) she gave birth to her last kitty! So Mom had 3 kits on 3 separate days - I call this AMAZING!

PS: Mom and babes are ALL doing FINE!

Thanks for letting us know all went well! I couldn't help with your original question (I have boy kitties), but I hoped all turned out well and Momma and the kittens would be OK. How amazing, three kittens on three days! Are they going to name them, something unusual like the days of the week, LOL! "Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, time for dinner..."

Glad all are doing well, it isn't all that unusual for a kitty to have kits spread apart. They are probably from 3 different matings as well. Cats also seem to like to have kits at night, at least my ferals always did.
