That is a nice looking snake, and I appriciate the pics, as not many of them are posted as you said.
On a lighter note, CHUG IT ! (that pic is quite funny, he seems to consider gravity a friend)

Looking great Art. Nice and healthy too! I'm not sure if you ever seen his mom, but here she is. She's quite a snake, nice easy going temperment and a good feeder. I plan on breeding her again this year.

Thanks, Phil. I'm proud of the little guy. And yes, he should be healthy with that appetite!

Beautiful!

It's a shame these guys aren't more popular in the pet trade. I suppose I can understand why, what with their somewhat dull pattern. But you really can't get a better beginner colubrid. Aside from the small size of hatchlings (snakes being escape artists and all) that is.
I only recently came across the amel caligaster. Gorgeous critter!
I tell you Art, I'm sort of glad they are not that popular. Maybe thats the way its supposed to be.
Everyone has their own thing that attracts us all in a different way to this great hobby. Thats the beautiful thing about it. I can say that there was a time when I was allured by the bright and flashy, but after a while the bright colors lost their luster, and I settled back in to what fascinated me to begin with. That being the snakes themselves with all the interesting aspects of their natural history and how they fit in with their enviroment. Things like the subtle differences shown between various locality's, and being able to observe them in their natural habitat. I have actually seen a number of hobbyist like myself that have come full circle, and settled back into the niche from which we started from.
Of course I know others that think I'm a little bonkers LOL!
I have to agree with you 100%. Although I do like some of the different colors of the morphs available, I prefer the natural colors much better. The Caligaster is one of the prime examples of mother natures camoflauge jobs. Just something about the earthy tones that I really get into! I could keep DeKays, ringnecks, and red bellied browns just as easy as anything else. Im going to be on the lookout for hognoses this year, caught one in my yard last summer, showed him to the wife and son, and let him go about his merry way.
Do you guys have cabin fever as bad as I do? Im ready to get out and do some hunting!! LOL
Art, very nice little guy you have there!! I would like to see him in a year or so!
Happy herping
Brian
Brian, good to hear from another fan of real snakes. By real, I simply mean as occuring in the wild not trying to slam the morph guys or anything.
I know what you mean, I can appreciate all the geneticaly engineered morphs, and there is some nice "eye candy" out there for their following. I would never knock someone for keeping what interest them, and I can certainly understand why these beautiful snakes have a following.
It does seem that the naturally occuring color forms are often overlooked by many.
And yes, winter seems like its lasting forever.......
