Hi There,

It's possible that your cat is trying to scratch her back by doing this. Try running a hand lightly over her back when she is upright and see how she reacts. If she is sensitive, she may have fleas or some kind of allergy affecting her skin and therefore causing her to itch.

Take care,

KitKat has some good ideas there. If, after trying what KitKat suggested, you find that it doesn't seem to help, you might want to take her to the vet and have her checked for Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome. Cats do some pretty strange things when they have that. Some of the symptoms are rolling of the skin on their back, twitching when you touch them on the lower back, chasing their tail, etc. Samantha had it a few years ago. When she was touched on the lower back, right above her tail, her head would jerk like she was going to convulse. The vet gave her a cotisone injection and it eliminated it completely.

These are good ideas, however, I think the cat may just be playing. I have a cat that rolls around like something's possessed her whenever we put clean sheets on the bed or have just washed the blanket for the couch. It is almost seizure like, but when I go over to talk to her, she is completely responsive. If you interrupt your cat's rolling behavior, does it work, or does she behave like she can't help but thrash around? If she acts like it's involuntary, I'd say take her to the vet. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.
