Hello all, new here.

AtelerixMel Sep 21, 2007 08:41 PM

I belonged to the chameleon forums a few years ago, but haven't posted in the cat ones.

My boyfriend and I have done a couple rounds of fostering kittens for the local humane society. The kittens were fostered because they were too young for adoption.

Tomorrow I'm returning the second foster group, and bringing home a different foster, who is from the first group, whom I'll be adopting!

He's a little black kitty named Renegade. Right now he has a URI, so I'll be giving him some meds until that clears up. Then he'll return to shelter for neutering, and I'll be able to officialy adopt him!

I'm sure I'll have questions to ask you all, thanks for reading!

Welcome! Do you also have a cat named Whiskers, in addition to Renegade, from your signature block?

You've come to the right place to ask questions and share pictures and stories!

I look forward to seeing pictures of Renegade and hearing of his kitten antics! URIs are very common in cats that spend time at a vet or shelter. Both of mine came to me with a URI when I adopted them many years ago from a shelter. One remains with me now, he is 16 and is three legged. I just treated him for a URI last week. Three legged cats are more susceptible to URIs from the way they sit. It is his second in about 3 1/2 years of the amputation. I am sure you know this, but do give every last antibiotic pill/squirt they gave you -- even if he seems better. They have to have the full treatment to make sure it is all gone...

Bless you for the foster work you do!

Boy, I must be drinking and typing, LOL. How does a cat get a URI from sitting funny? LOL. I am treating him for a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). Both take antibiotics, usually, and need the full course.

The rest I said about URIs from the shelters come true. Mine picked up URIs when the spent an overnight at the vet before... Passes quick between animals.

Whiskers actually lives with my parents. I thought of moving her across the state to live with me; but their house is her house, and I didnt think she'd be happy here.

Renegade is currently racing through the house yelling MEOW, MEOW, MEOW! He wasnt quite so vocal two weeks ago! He enjoys being held and petted and purrs continuously.

hello, I am new here too and have been reading through the general discussion with interest. So many different topics are covered and very encouraging to be able to ask for advice from other cat lovers.
I was adopted by two adopted cats three months ago, they have been neutered and spayed, settled in really well but just over the last couple of weeks the boy (Spice) has been spraying in the living room. Only in this room - thank heavens!
I googled to find some explanation for his behaviour and found that cats often do this if the furniture is re-arranged - which I did a while ago.
It is difficult to find where he has actually sprayed, although by sniffing at one of the music systems speakers he showed me where he had just been and at least I could clean it.
Has anyone else had a cat who reacted like this, and what do you do to reassure the cat that everything is still alright? Spice isn't nervy at all, he is very laid back and lazy.

Hi guys and welcome!

Yeah another foster mom, can't have enough of those!

And yes, Anna its true cats don't like change. A black light will help you find spots and a good enzyme cleaner will get rid of the odors. Shhhhhhhhh, checkin to see if Franci is lookin over my shoulder, I dared to wash the cover on her favorite chair and she promptly let me know of her dissaproval by spraying it...

I would also like to invite you both to join us in chats. Lots of experience with all sorts of cat problems there, and some good times...the link will take you to the schedule.

Thank for the welcome PhTessie,
there hasn't been any more spraying thank goodness, but after reading that your female sprays?? just wondering if the culprit is not Spice but Tabi.

I keep sniffing suspiciously when I come into the house just in case, but all is well so far. No more rearranging the furniture from now on.

This probably means that if we move - and eventually I will have to - there will be a wild spraying as the cats adapt to the new place? I had four moves with our beloved older male cat and he never sprayed, well except for in the garden.

MOL, female cats do occasionally spray, but not like males do...and yes moves are pretty stressful for most cats...sounds like you were lucky...
