Creepy Cat Behavior

sumalilover Sep 30, 2007 09:53 PM

I have a hallway in my house that connects my livingroom to my balcony porch. Almost every day when I'm watching TV in the livingroom, my cat goes out into the hallway and freaks out at something, arching her back and puffing her tail as if something is coming after her, but nothing is there. She sometimes meows, follows something, and then chases it around, but there will be nothing there. Then she'll jump in the air on all fours like she's really threatened by something. Its crazy and scary. When I go in the hallway to calm her down she runs away at first and it takes her a minute to calm down. I know her behavior, and other than this she is a normal cat. I've seen her arch her back if she's caught off guard by something or if something really startles her, but that hallway is different. When she notices a bug, I always see it! She is pretty normal and does regular cat things. I just have no idea why she freaks out in that hallway. could it be a scent? Any explanations?

She could hear, smell or see something that you can't but she could also just be playing. We call it chasing beauvarts. Several of mine have these little "fits", where they go chasing after something invisable and puff up and look silly springing and running and rolling over at nothing. It is pretty common among cats.
