Purchasing a Ocicat, where to begin??

vakejairam Feb 01, 2008 12:43 PM

Hello:

At first, the question may sound funny, but if you do a google search, TONS of breeders are listed. Curious how others went about finding a reputable breeder?

In addition, are there any breeders who breed ocicats for size. I know ocicats tend to be on the larger end of the cat size spectrum, but curious if some breeders focus on producing BIG ocicats...just curious.

Thanks,

VJ

I know the back of Cat Fancy Magazine lists breeders. It sounds like you've found a pool of breeders and want to know how to select. I would be in the same boat if I went with a purebred. I wonder if you can call a breeder and ask for references? They probably have to prove the cat's pedigree, but how do you know about standards (I haven't really thought about it, but something like a close family line, not much fresh blood brought into the mix, problems could arise).

Thought: There is a section on the main page called breeds, A to Z, and you might have better luck on the Ocicat board. I think there is also a breeder/breeding section. They may not breed Ocicats, but may help you to determine good breeding qualities (standards, things a breeder should produce/pedigree/registration, guarantee you should get from a breeder, etc...)

Good luck. Sorry I am not much help...

Clarification -- The section on A-Z breeds and for breeders is on the main page of this board, below where you found this Genearal Board, towards the bottom of the page. Didn't want you to think I was still talking about Cat Fancy, LOL...

I think the first thing that I would do if I was looking into purchasing a purebred cat was to find a place close enough that I could go see it and meet the people and the cats and see how they were cared for.

Below is a link to a feature article on our site for choosing a breeder. There are also some articles on choosing a pedigreed cat or kitten.

The internet is a great place to do your homework, but not the best place to purchase an animal. It is too easy for backyard breeders and kitten mills to pass of poorly bred animals on unsuspecting customers.

Also check with purebred rescue groups. You would be surprised how many cats wind up in rescue because the buyers didn't do their homework and selected a cat for appearance instead of purrsonality.
