Mercury Vapor Bulb

Aimee Oct 13, 2003 03:33 PM

I just ordered (from Reptiledirect.com) UV Mercury Vapor Lamp. Do I still need a spotlight for heat or does the MV lamp give off heat too? Thanks

With the powersun you get both heat and uvb depending on your cage size you might need an extra light to get temps right, but with my setups the mvb and the fuorescent for added light intensity is all I need. What size cage do you have? It's a good idea even with the powersuns to add a regular shop fixture and a fluorescent light to the legnth of the cage for added light intensity. Since you using the mvb all you need is a regular fluorescent which costs about 2 bucks for the added light.

My aquarium is 2' x 1' x 17"H. Right now, it has a spot basking light and a coil UVA/UVB type light.

Those coils really don't put off any uvb for any distances at all especially for 17 inches. For this set up a 100 watt mercury vapor basking spot as well an a small fuorecent fixture with a regular cheap fluorescent ge light would heat and have plenty of light intensity for that cage.He should thrive as far as light and heat goes in such a set-up. I recommend a digital thermometer with a probe or a temp gun from proexotics to keep track of temps/ Good luck
