Arthritis in elderly cats

janome Jun 04, 2008 05:40 PM

Shadow Baby is my oldest cat. She is 16. Couple months ago she was limping on her left rear leg. Took her to the vet. X-rays were taken. My vet said she has arthritis in her hip. Gave her some deximethazone liquid that helped back then.

Now she is limping again. Same rear leg. Is there anything OTC that I can give her? I can't take her back to the vet just to have him tell me "oh, she is having a flare up". I guess I could call him. I dont' know.

Well, I was just wondering. Thanks

Hi Janome,

Unfortunately, there is nothing OTC that you can safely give to cats for arthritis flare-ups. Drugs that are totally safe for us are deadly to cats.

If your kitty needs a long-term steroid for his arthritis, ask your vet about giving a Dexamethasone injection. This should give relief for at least a month.

Hopefully, your baby won't need meds on a continual basis.

Ask your vet about cosaquin. Not sure of the spelling, but my folks give this to Tigger, a 17 year old arthritic cat every day. Dad pours out the contents of the pill into a dish, and mixes it with baby lamb (yes, human baby food). Tigger gobbles it down as a treat. It does help him.
