Kittens playing and peeing in atrium HELP

nicky890 Sep 13, 2003 03:05 PM

I adopted 2 kittens, and they have been very good about using their litter box.......until lately. I have an atrium about 10 feet long and 3 ft wide in our entrance hall. They are constantly going into it climbing the plants, and using it as a litter box. There is no way that I can shut it off from them. I have tried spraying them with water, and spraying the plants with bitter apple spray, to no avail. They love it! I guess they think they are outside. Has anyone had this problem and solved it????

Are they using the plant soil as a litterbox or going ont he floor of the atrium? If they are using the soil, that's pretty typical of cats. It's a natural medium for them to use. Puting some large marbles or stone landscaping chips over the soil will deter them. They won't like digging in the marble or stone and it doesn't look to bad either. If they are using the floor, I suggest putting a litterbox in there. Have you checked to see if any of the plants in your atrium are harmful or poisonous to the cats? Some plants can kill your kittens if ingested, so make sure there are no plants in there that will harm them.

Munchie,

Thanks for your suggestion of placing stones in the atrium....I think that will work. The plants in there are not harmful, they just love climbing them.

Thanks!
