Too many cat problems

bonkelsmeeks Oct 02, 2003 09:40 PM

I have three cats and one of them cries all night long and keeps us up. She was a stray who we've taken in. We've taken her to the vet and she is healthy but when she first came, she was pregnant. So we had the kittens and they're all gone now (except one who we've kept). While the kittens were here, there was no crying problem as she was very preoccupied with them. She has not been outside since before the birth back in June. We plan to have her spayed and to keep her as an indoor cat. Our other cat has been with my husband for nine years and he sleeps in bed with us and does his best to keep the new cat out of our room. Sometimes I think she's crying for attention since she doesn't feel like she can come in our room while we sleep. We love her to death but the crying is driving us crazy. What can we do?

First off, get the cat spayed ASAP. This will help with the nighttime crying. Second, get some Comfort Zone plug-ins to ease the tensions around the house.

The final thing is to reinforce quiet behavior. This is hard. Figure out what treat the cat really loves. Then when she has been still and quiet for 15 minutes give her a treat and say, "Good, quiet". Gradually increase the time by five minutes. When she cries at night, do not get up and pay attention to her as this reinforces the behavior.

Good luck!

Get the cat spayed as soon as possible. She may be in heat. That is probably why she is crying. My boss had a cat that would cry like that all the time until he got her spayed.

Good luck,
Jaime

Thanks for the advice, what are Comfort Zone plug-ins? Also my husband just informed me that she doesn't only cry at night, but anytime I am not near her. I don't hear her during the day because she doesn't cry when I'm around. But he says whenever he gets home from work before me, she cries just like she does all night. So I don't think it's heat. We are taking her to the vet this week to prepare for the spaying so we'll see. Thanks again.

Here is a url to a site that tells about the Comfort Zone plug-in. www.farnampet.com/product/products.asp?product_id=100586

This product is available at most large pet supply stores, however call first and ask if it is in stock. Or you can order in on-line at the site I gave you.
