I gave in...I'm such a sap.

Ravyn11 Oct 24, 2003 09:47 AM

The Comfort Zone plug in helped a great deal. Much of his crying, aggressive, and destructive behavior halted...not all of it, but a great deal.

I was determined not to get another kitten. I already have thirty some-odd animals, but its clear the one thing he really and truly needs is a playmate his size, and it's not fair to him to deprive him of that.

That...and I saw the most gorgeous tortishell tonkinese/siamese cross that was just his age, languishing in the shelter.

I'm in contact with the shelter manager now. I've told her my dilemna with Poseidan and she has agreed that a playmate is probably the only cure, since everything else I've tried either hasn't worked, or has only partially worked. She says the tonkinese is a little 'sassy' but shouldn't have much issue. She's going to give her to me on a trial basis. We're going to see how they do for a couple of months, and if it isn't working, the shelter manager will take her back (it's a no kill shelter, fortunately) and see if we can't find a better match for him.

Hopefully I'll be picking her up tonight. I'll get pictures up as soon as I can. Keep your fingers crossed for Poseidan!

Oh I hope it works. Have you been over to introducing new pets forum? They have great advice over there on the proper way to introduce. Of course I didn't read it until after I made the wrong choose on the intro part haha.

Good luck crossing fingers.

Yes, I've been over there I've introduced many a cat before, and I'm not worried about the dog. She knows when to take a cat's hint to back off and eventually wins them over just by her sheer lovey-ness.

I'll get pics of her up as soon as I'm able. I'm picking her up in about four hours.

I'm so 'sited!

HERE SHE IS! Isn't she gorgeous? The pic does NOT do her justice at all.

Well, she's in the bedroom today while I'm at work. I don't even want them seeing each other yet until I can be there with them. She did see the dog momentarily last night, and just kind of stiffened up. She seems a bit shyer than Poseidan did when he first came, but that's normal.

I have the next three days off work so we'll see how things go.

Here's another pic of her just for kicks.

This morning after I got up and puttered about the house for a little while, I decided to put the other two cats away and give my new kitty Iris some time out of the bathroom, to have a look around her new digs. I had seen my older cat Athena in the bedroom a few minutes before, so I put the dog in there as well and closed the door, then let Iris out of the bathroom and put Poseidan in it.

She went sniffing about and exploring, and I kept about my chores, letting her do her thing.

Well, apparently, Athena wasn't in the room when I shut my door, but was hiding behind either the TV or the bearded dragon cage...her two favorite spots. I went into the kitchen and literally dropped the box I was carrying.

If you knew Athena, you'd fully understand why this floored me so. She hasn't liked any other cat since her brother Church disappeared. For her to come across a new one and not be a hissing, spitting, growling fury up on some high perch somewhere on the opposite side of the room is like finding Cujo kissing some little baby bunny off in a field somewhere. It just doesn't happen.

But there they were, just like that, both purring away as if they'd known each other their entire lives. Not a hair lifted or a whisker turned. I just had to take a picture to commemorate the moment...and to prove it to myself later that it really happened.

Looks like I made a good kitty pick!

Oh my gosh that is so great. Maybe Athena knows that Iris is there to play with Poseidan, and to keep him away from her.
Or maybe Iris is just a very good kitty and told Athena she wasnt there to take over. haha. Who knows. So how did Poseidan react to Iris?

Well, he growled a little bit when he first found her in *his* bathroom, but since then there hasn't been a problem between them, either. The only one she seems hesitant about is the dog...and I'm afraid Red isn't really helping because she likes to chase. Poseidan will run away from her on purpose to get her to chase him, but Iris runs because she's scared. Red, of course, thinks its all a game and bounces off after her.

I was expecting it to take at least several days for introductions but they're all already sharing the house completely. Poseidan, oddly enough, doesn't seem all that interested in playing with her, yet her just BEING there seems to have calmed him down quite a bit already. I dunno...maybe she just radiates good Karma I'll keep you posted.

Well I am so glad things are going well. When I introduced our new kitten one cat(Crash) had a fit. She is still stuck in that fit. Now Crash hates all four of the other cats. I am going to talk to the vet about in on her next visit.
So glad things are going well.
