Aggressive cat? Help!

maxmom Nov 02, 2003 11:16 AM

My Maine Coon cat( neutered male, age 4)has recently started acting aggressive. My mom (84 yrs old) came over to feed him while we were away as she has always done, and he climbed up her leg as she was walking out the door( to prevent her from leaving?), got hooked in her skin or purposefully attacked(unsure which), and she ended up in the ER with REALLY deep gouges in her leg. Then a friend came over to visit yesterday and when she headed for another room, he faced off in front of her, spitting and hissing and swiping at her with his claws! She has met him many times with no problem. He also gave me a little bite on the arm today for no particular reason. We do have a puppy in the household ( we've had him since May), and they co-exist without much trouble. What should I do??? Help!

That is odd. Maybe you should try getting feliway plugins. I have heard it helps calm your cat.
I am sure others will post with some help soon.

Take him to the vet and have him checked. Some cats display this sort of behavior as a way of getting your attention and tell you that something is hurting or they are uncomfortable. Perhaps a UTI or something.

Main Coons can sometimes be rather aggressive becayse they are still quite connected to their feral bloodline. But I would have him checked anyway to rule out any health problems. If all comes back clear then talk to your vet about what steps can be taken from there. I had a friend of mine that actually had to give her cat anti-depressants because of his irratic behaviour and aggression. It was almost like the cat had a form of ADD and when he got bored he would attack their other cat and them.

The cat definitely needs a vet check. Then it's time to assess if there have been any big changes in his life - are there new cats outside? New furniture? Is the puppy acting different?

To tame the aggression, try playing with him using a feathered cat tease-type toy. When he gets aggressive, if you can, place him into a "time out" situation - like a bathroom with a closed door for 15 minutes.

Try putting a few Comfort Zone plug-ins around.

If all else fails, talk to the vet about some sort of medication to help with this, and also to see if he/she can recommend an animal behaviorist.

Good luck!

I did a lot of research on Maine Coons, and never heard of any of them being aggressive.
This is a quote from one of the many breeders I talked to (emailed):---"they are not aggressive and their old bloodlines were not feral before becoming registered--they were always in people's homes, farms, or boats--so they were never anything except sweet"

So it must be something in the environment causing stress if he isn't sick.

OH! Well see, you really do learn something every day. I was told completely the opposite.

So... don't listen to me about Main Coons LOL
