My 10 month old female is unfriendly all of a sudden...(help, pls)

keely Jan 07, 2004 07:38 PM

Hi everyone...I am new to this board. My 10 month old spayed female Siamese/Tabby mix is all of a sudden very unfriendly to me. We have had her since she was 6 wks old and have always held her a lot and she has been quite cuddly.

She will play with my husband when he gets home from work with cat toys, fetching, etc., but whenever I try to hold her or snuzzle with her, she bites or scratches.

Is she going through her rebelious teen years or something?

Please help. Thank you very much.

This is a toughie. If she were not spayed, I'd be wondering if that were the problem, however spaying usually takes care of any extreme mood swings. I would recommend a vet check just on the off-chance that something medical isn't happening. Once a medical problem has been ruled out, you can start to consider it behavioral.

Could you possibly have done something to startle her - or did something happen to upset her and you were close by? She might be "blaming" you for something. For example a broomstick falls near a cat and scares her, but her "mom" is close by. Instead of blaming the broomstick, the cat blames the human.

I would recommend that you refrain from petting and cuddling her for the time being unless she inititates it. Get some Comfort Zone plug-ins with Feliway and put them around the house. Also try sitiing quietly alone in a room with her - you focus on something else other than the cat and occasionally toss a treat her way. Do this for 15 minutes a day. She should warm up to you. The trick here is to avoid eye contact.

Good luck! I hope the problem resolves itself soon.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I will try your suggestions, as they sound wonderful. Lily is a little high-strung. I forgot to mention that we also have a little neutered boy (9 mo. old), Tony, and sometimes I think she is startled by him.

Thank you again. Any more suggestions would be much appreciated. We will try to find the Feliway plug-ins. We do have some of the spray.

She may be going through a TEEN rebellious(sp?) state BUT has anyone or thing she loved or enjoyed left her recently? My almost 9 month old Kitten was acting the same way! I was so hurt as HE was a love from day one. THEN I realized his behaviour started shortly after my Mr Wonderful Big Poodle, Schatzi died! They had played together and he really missed him. I lay in bed one morning and tried to "communicate" with Benji and told him how Schatzi was very sick and how his Human mother was sad cause she missed him and wanted him in Heaven with her. I also told him how much I missed Schatzi. Don't know if that was what did the trick or what but he is much happier and while he does occaisionally bite it is NOTHING like how he did!

Thank you -- thank you!!!

And, what a beautiful picture. People are so nice on this message board.

I will sit down and have a heart-to-heart talk with my Lily. I know she understands me -- some ESP involved here, too. Maybe she senses that I am grieving for my 17 mo old Abyssinian who passed away recently. Who knows?

Anyway, I really appreciate you response and lovely picture. Thank you so very much.
