How can I teach 'off limits' on a strange place?

AbsoluteRae Feb 05, 2004 03:14 AM

I love my cats. Love, love, love them. However, I also love my 6 month old cornsnake, and lately the two have been conflicting. The trouble has been my cat, Theta, sitting on the top of the snake cage, especially at inconvinent times (like during feeding). Also, Theta sits and stares at the tank for hours, waiting for Nora (the snake) to come out of hiding. I usually don't have a problem teaching them off limits locations, but this is a little difficult as I don't want to impose too much stress on my snake or disturb her environment. Suggestions?

As a side note, Theta is not on my list of favorite kitties right now anyway. She's part siamese and loves to bring me little trinkets from all over the house. Tonight, she brought me a scorpion while I was sleeping, and the darn thing crawled in bed with me and stung me. I know that Theta totally adores me, but sometimes I wish she would tone it down a little ;o)

Can you close the door to the snake's room, especially when feeding the snake?

I don't know a lot about snakes, but I understand they sense vibrations but don't really hear. A shake can might be something you could use. You put a few pennys in a soda can and shake it when the cat approaches the snake's cage. Hopefully the noise generated by the shake can wouldn't bother the snake, but you would probably know about that more than I do! Marbles, put in some sort of container that would be tipped over easily, could help keep her off the cage too and might not disturb the snake either.

Good luck with your baby. Sorry about the scorpion in the bed. That is worse than the cockroach my cat brought me once. Ewwww!

Wow, yes, great idea, lol. I would have never thought of that, but it's a totally wonderful solution! Thanks so much.
