Cat sitting strangely/meowing

doh Mar 09, 2004 02:52 PM

I just got a new cat from the pound, she is about 5 years old. We are not sure if it has been fixed, but we are taking her in later this week.

She is a very friendly cat. She always sleeps with me on my bed, loves jumping up on my lap, and she is great!

My problem is that she often will start crouching down with her bum in the air, and just start meowing, and twitching her feet. She always does this when she hears someone walking up the stairs, but she will also just start doing it out of nowhere. She usually does this for about 5-10 minutes, and during that time, although she still purrs and enjoys my company, it seems like she may be suffering from something...

Can anyone tell me what the problem could be?

It is good that you are having the cat examined by the vet. She is probably spayed if you got her from a shelter, but if she isn't the vet will be able to tell.

Her behaviors sounds a bit like being in heat, although I would suspect that somehow she feels reinforced when she does the elevator butt routine. The sounds of someone walking by may trigger that response - sort of like Pavolov's dogs. She hears the sound, thinks it's time to do her cute thing and gets some sort of response from you that she feels is desirable.

Good luck with the kitty. She really sounds like a cutie pie. Let us know what the vet says.
