INCESSANT HOWLING!!! Please help before my sanity is lost!

ElusiveKimmaby Apr 29, 2004 03:48 PM

A stray kitty came to us about two weeks ago in the middle of a big rainstorm. She was howling and crying and so we took her in. At first we figured she was meowing so much because she was soaked and unhappy, but ever since she found us the meowing has never, never, never stopped. She's littertrained, so we suspect someone dumped her here. We suspected that maybe she was in heat, but now it's been far too long. She can be trying to go to sleep, standing around, sitting in place, being petted, even be eating or drinking with food or water in her mouth and she meows sooooo loud and it never stops! The meowing never stops. It's calmed down just a little little bit, but she never ever stops, and when she's outside she howls like she's having one of her organs slowly ripped out of her body. It's such a horrible sound! Is there any way to make this stop?! The rest of the family wants to take her to the SPCA, but I refuse to do that, I KNOW they will kill her, I HATE the facility we have here! We can't keep her anyway and I'm searching for a local rescue, but until then, does anyone know of something I can do to make her SHUT UP?!!!!!!!!
she's in my lap right now and quiet.... this is the first time she's been quiet in a whole week, minus the times that she is asleep. she can't even seem to let herself rest because she meows so much!

Are you sure she isn't sick? She may be in some sort of pain. I know your not keeping her but have you called a local vet's office? Some times they will take strays, but spay them and make sure they are healthy before they adopt them out.

She really does need a vet exam ASAP. Perhaps you could see your way through to getting her one.

Meanwhile, try a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway and see if that helps. It could just be that she is feeling traumatized and lost still. She's been through a lot.

I don't know if it's pain. I think she's so extremely desperate for attention that it's driving her crazy. Only lately she's started to calm down a tiny bit. If she's in my lap laying down, she stops meowing. If I'M petting her or holding her, she just purrs and doesn't meow quite so much. But the SECOND she's away from me it just doesn't stop... I don't know if I can even afford a vet exam for her. My parents certainly aren't going to pay for it, and I could barely afford to take my little rats to the vet a while ago! Hopefully one will look at her anyway, but I'm almost certain they'll just take her from me and shove her off to the evil SPCA, which will without any doubt in my mind put her down quickly.

Since the noise seems to be abating, then perhaps it is emotional. Poor baby. She's probably still very scared and wants her "mommy".

I agree. I'm going to put up found posters for her, I hope something turns up. I really do think that someone just dumped her here though. People like to do that because they know that we'll take in kitties.
The noise is better today than it had been the whole time. As long as she's with me and in my lap, she's OK. Maybe that means we can work to being in the same room and some peace and quiet! I hope she's going to be alright, I do feel awfully sorry for her.

I hope you can find her a good forever home. She is so starved for love and had a rough time of it.

I'd love to keep her if I could. I would love to give her what she needs. She's getting better every day, I really hate to risk losing any progress she's made. She's starting to talk-meow. Now if I walk away to go get something she goes into 3 syllable meows. If I'm leaving for class, it's long drawn out howls. If I'm just sitting here, and she's talking to me about how much she'd LOVE to play with my pet rat or ferret, they're little short meows. If she doesn't have any food, they're howls like when I leave. And, if she's just talking to me to let me know she's about to jump in my lap or worse, SLEEP ON MY FACE WHEN I AM NAPPING, they're little happy purry meows. Ah, nothing is quite as odd as being awakened by cat fur in every single one of your facial orifices.
