Can Love Conquer Spraying Behaviors?

KimberleyO Jul 06, 2004 02:20 PM

I have an 8 year old neutered male named Jazz. I rescued him when he was about 6 weeks old and he's been a big part of my feline family. I have two other cats as well (both neutered males) that have all grown up together, though Jazz is especially close to Neko - a striped tabby.

3 years ago we got a dog for our daughter. He's a 21 pound Pomeranian witha great attitude and a lot of affection for the cats, which is returned. He and Jazz get along well. I know that with this many animals, I need to make a concious effort to give everyone some special "mamma time", but Jazz seems to be especially affectionate and desiring of pets and conversations.

The issue: about 2 years ago (not right after the dog came on board but about a year after) he started to spray *everything*. Walls, cupboards, corners, speakers, the TV cabinet; everything. He knows he's not supposed to, but will do it right in front of us. This incenses my husband to the point where he's quite ready to get rid of the cat; something I'm not willing to do.

I need a solution to this problem that doesn't involve getting rid of animals to whom I've made a commitment! Please help.

I've never had a cat that sprayed, but people swear by the ComfortZone plug-ins with Feliway and the Feliway spray.

Try spraying the spray on the areas he sprays (after cleaning them, of course). I've also heard that using special enymatic cleaners you can get at the petstore will help eliminate the scent he leaves behind, which may be encouraging him to continue to spray.

It's odd that a neutered cat would spray, especially after being in an established household for so long.

Maybe consult with your vet, too. There may be something medical behind his behavior.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Thanks much - and I will.

The cat needs to go to the vet for a check up ASAP. Even though its been a long time, perhaps he has bladder issues.

If all is clear on the health front, then the problem is behavioral. You will need to take steps to retrain the cat to the box. Basically you need to confine the cat to a room like a bathroom, or a large cage with only food, water, bedding and the litterbox. As he begins to use the litterbox consistantly you can expand his space. There is more information at this link:

You need to thoroughly deodorize wherever the cats have been peeing and pooping. Petastic is highly recommended as is Heaven's Own. It is the smell of the "accidents" that causes a cat to reuse the place.

Check into using Feliway, a spray that mimics the happy scent cats leave when they rub their check against something. You can get it from your vet or from Cat Faeries at http://www.catfaeries.com
If you visit the website, you will see a phone number that you can call and for a fee discuss your cat's problems with someone. The person who does this is very knowlegeable and it may be worth the $$ for you. Feliway is also available in most large pet supply stores. There is also a plug-in with Feliway that can help.

Finally, if all else fails, ask you vet about using an antianxiety medication such as Buspar or Prozac. These very often work, however the decision to prescribe them will rest solely with your veterinarian who will be able to monitor the dosage and side effects. Love and patience can conquer this, but some veterinary intervention will probably be needed as well.
