confined cat

noggin Sep 16, 2004 06:27 AM

I have a two norwegian forest cat crosses. The boy was hit by a car last week and has significantly damaged one of his back legs. He's had the leg pinned and is in a cast. He is in a recovery cage on my dining room table. His sister won't look at him and hisses every time she goes anywhere near him. He is the more "Wegie" of the two and despite being only 18 months old is a big powerful cat. He's been sleeping and recovering for a week or so, but is starting to get frustrated as he's feeling better. The vet says he may have to be in the cage for another 5 weeks. I'm so worried that he will develop bahaviour problems, he's such a beautiful cat with a wonderful temperament! Any advice greatly appreciated.

His sister is growling at him because he smells funny (like the vet's office). I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you giving him lots of love while he is in the cage. That will help.

I am assuming he is in the cage for safety reasons so he doesn't reinjure the leg. If this is the case, perhaps you can figure out a way to get him out and into an area of the house where he can't jump up and hurt himself and see if you can re-socialize him with his sister.

Also you might try getting a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway (they are pricey!) and put that near him while he gets well.

I was looking for advice to prevent behaviour problems because my boyfriend has heard some horror stories about confined cats. I've been giving him lots of attention and his favourite food and we've taken him out for cuddles. I'm just worried about the length of time he has to stay in the cage. The other problem is that I am on leave at the moment, but I have to go back to work in a few days and then he'll be alone during the day. I've put toys in with him and I'm hoping he'll want to play with them.

I think you are doing the best you can to prevent behavior problems with the cat. Is the cage near a window? If he can look out it might help - when I have to board my cat I always insist on a window seat and it seems as if my cat does much better. Also you might want to consider leaving a radio on in the room - not very loud - I understand talk radio is best, although don't let your cat near your phone or he might call in with an opinion!
