Overshooting the litter box.

cbutter Nov 06, 2004 12:10 PM

My 2 year old female wouldn't dream of not using the litter box. She gets in, squats down, starts to pee, and then lifts her hind quarters as high as she can, so that she is sending the stream over the top of the box and on to the floor.

I have tried enclosed litter boxes, but she always aims for the door.

I have tried taller containers (not designed as litter boxes), but even when they are so tall that she struggles to get in and out, she still overshoots the box.

Has anyone else had this problem? Has anyone found a solution?

Do you have the space to try a much larger container for a litterbox? I've heard of people who have used small plastic wading pools as litterboxes. Also you might want to consider a top-entry litterbox.

We have a cat that does that. There are two females here and a male. Not sure which one misses. But we now go the dollar store and buy those plastic table cloths. We tack part to the wall and put the rest of it under the boxes. It make clean up a little easier. We just throw the used one away and put a new one down. Of course we still have to wash the bottom of the litter boxes.

She's healthy. She always backs up to the edge of whatever container I use. I am doing the tablecloth thing, but hadn't thought of the dollar store as a source for them.

Thanks to all.

Just a quick question: Has she gone to vet, to eliminate a medical problem that might be causing her to stand up? She may in discomfort somehow.

Good luck,

Nancy
