I'm back..after 8 months re: Bengal and kitten

AstiLover Dec 15, 2004 01:10 PM

My 7 year old Bengal was not ahppy when I introduced my new 10 week old rescue kitten last February 14, the kitten is now 12 pounds of sweetness. Though they sleep and play together, the Bengal was urinating on my curtains and areas where the kitten like to play and sleep. I had him ckd for UTI twice at the vet, all is OK. I had the sheers replaced and had the curtaisn shortened and cleaned, added another litterbox and have continuously used Feliway plug-in and spray, cat attract in the litter and even had him on a drug similar to Buspar (which I took him off immediately, he foamed at the mouth and got really lethargic). It's now 10 months later, the kitten is grown and still sweet, not aggressive, jsut likes kitten play and I haven't had any accident sfrom teh bengal in 3 months UNTIL this last 2 weeks. He got into the garage and when I went to get him he was spraying on the wall by the garage side door! Maybe some other animal had gotten in there. I did not punish him, have never punished him. BUT now he is peeing on the kittens favorite toys, even toys that were once my Asti's (now deceased) toys that the kitten took a liking to. So it's not that the toys were new, some have been around for 6-7 years! I had to throw even the plastic round toy that holds a ball that the cats can spin. ANY ideas?

I would bet the Bengal did smell some smells and is now trying to mark everything. I am not sure what the best thing to do would be here. Perhaps you could re-introduce them - put the Bengal in a room you've swabbed down to be sure there is no scent and then bring in objects that the kitten has marked with his cheek in a friendly way. Then gradually let them into the same area with each other.

Smile, it will make them wonder what you are up to!

It might not even be related to the kitten. The bengal could be seeing another cat outside. He might be trying to mark the kitten and the kittens things are his. If the another cat had sprayed near you door in the garage (I hate when cats mark my car!) it could have set him off. Also, have you had your 10 month old kitten fixed?

Sorry..I forgot to tell you that the Bengal and kitten are fixed. The kitten has been fixed for several months, the Bengal for several years (he's 7). I'm thinking of trying to add some herbal calming to the water.(?) Possibly the influx of squirrells right before it got really cold over-stimulated the Bengal, don't know. It's hard to observe since I am away from home for 10 hours a day working.
I did purchase some new toys to present at Christmas, should I have the kitten mark these with his friendly scent first before actually giving them to the cats? (I have another 15 year old fixed abby, but his only problem is old age LOL!)

I agree with Jamie there is a very strong chance that something outside is triggering a territorial marking behavior inside. I had a female that horrifically got up set at even the site of squirrels and would mark & howl at the site of them.
One product that did work well at discouraging visitors on our property was called the ScareCrow. Which is a motion activated sprinkler. Of course it may not be an option now with winter and all depending on where you are from. But it work very well with the squirrels and visiting neighborhood cats here in the warmer weather.

Good Luck!
