Picky Eater Siamese is driving us CRAZY

tina_beau Jan 07, 2005 05:17 AM

Hello and Happy New Year to all!!

I am the cat mommy of a 6 month old Blue Point Siamese named Beau Hugs.
Though he enjoys to eat he is an EXTREMELY picky eater and he is driving us crazy. I remember telling my friends when their children were not eating all of their food that no child in the modern world has died of starvation but I failed to see the anguish that is being caused by your beloved child (or pet in my case) not eating!!

Yes he is healthy and active and will under no circumstances die of starvation but what about the whole cans of cat food I am throwing away because he won't touch it?

At first I got him his "favorite" and picking that out was easy. He only goes for the tiny, expensive gourmet food cans. But my problem is that if one day he will eat this specific flavor and brand, chances are the next day he won't even touch it!!!
Who the heck said that cats do not like to change their dietary preferrences? Mine does!! He wants something new every day and I am running out of options.
I even tried cooking for him (some rice and minced meat the vet said) but he won't even eat human food! (Except cheese!)

While he is not fed he will cry and cry and cry and annoy the heck out of everyone, especially my husband who will end up beating him. The poor soul is only hungry.
And forget about the old trick of "letting him go hungry and then he will eat anything". Not Beau!! There is a greater chance of Hell freezing over than Beau eating something he does not want to eat!!

What do I do?? I have tried every brand in the market and I still can't get a pattern!! I am going insane not to mention broke! I end up spending more than $120 a month only to feed one kitty!!

HELP!!! Any advice is welcome!!
Thanks
Tina

Maybe he doesn't like it because it is missing something that he needs in his diet. Have you tried the name brand canned food: Wellness, Innova, Nutro?

Hi Jaime!
Thanks for your replies!
Yes he only eats Name Brand food anyway (Purina, Friskies, Hill's etc). I also give him dry cat food (which he likes but just doesn't seem to make him feel full) with extra Taurine by Purina. He just takes a few nibbles and then looses interest in his food even if its his favorite. Its not that he is not hungry, he IS hungry. He just wants something ELSE other than the thing I am feeding him and every meal he wants something different in flavor!! And of course he won't go NEAR the cheap cans!!

Thanks for any insight!
Tina

You may have to adopt a meal time routine with this guy. Sitting with him and petting him might help. He may crave attention.

Also, the name brands you mention are not really the "premium brands" and you might want to go to a large pet supply store and check out the ingrediants in their premium brands. Look for human grade meats, no meat by-products, no corn or wheat (gluten).

A vet exam might be in order to determine if there is an underlying physical problem.

Finally, please don't let your husband beat or hit the cat. Striking out at a cat doesn't work and will only serve to increase the problem.

Good luck!

By all means don't beat the cat. That only serves to intimidate him/her and would probably make his/her eating habits even more sporadic and not a pleasant experience. Secondly, don't thow away cans of food he/she doesn't like, donate them to a shelter, as they are always in need.

A visit to the vet for some possible bloodwork and to rule out anything physically wrong.

A lot of cats crave attention, as they are social eaters and it may be that this is really what he/she craves, not necessarily a daily change in foods. Bring him/her to his bowl and pet him and soothingly talk to him/her while introducing the food bowl.Try mixing canned and dry premium food.

Please let us know how it turns out! Good luck.
