Actually it would depend more on how well the cats do in the carriers once inside. If they are terribly afraid then it would be best not to plan an extremely long day or they might develop elimination/eating problems. If they can relax a bit then you could plan on a bit longer.
I would say probably no more than 8 hours maximum in the carrier. And be sure never to leave them alone in a motel room unless they are secured in the carriers because you never know who might enter your room. Also be sure that hiding places under the beds, dressers, etc. are blocked off.
Good luck and have a safe trip!

I drove from WA state to Maine with my cat. I had a litter box in the car for her. At that time I didnt' think about putting her in a carrier. Now I know better. But I drove 22 hrs. I also left her in the car over night. The first night I didn't and I almost lost her in the hotel. The second night the hotel didn't allow cats and I had been driving for 22 hrs so I took the room. It was warm then it was September.
Anyway good luck on your trip.
If you want to drive further then just 8 hrs a day, I would stop to let them out of the carriers every 3 hrs and let them walk around the car.
Good luck

Gosh! I hope you mean walk around INSIDE the car.

OOPS yes I meant inside the cat!
I did have a harness and leash on her incase she got out. But I took the leash/harness off when she was by herself in the car.
I was afraid she would hurt herself.
